2009 61th National USWCA Bonspiel - "Love to Curl"
Wauwatosa Curling Club February 11-15, 2009
The 61st Annual USWCA National Bonspiel was held in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin over Valentines's Day weekend. With the theme 'Love to Curl" all the women put their hearts on the ice for the chance to have their names engraved on one of the trophies steeped in curling history. The bonspiel began with the Opening Ceremony Wednesday evening with bagpipes, past presidents and plenty of fun greeting old and meeting new participants.
Curling began early on Thursday, followed by the annual meeting and banquet held at the new Crown Plaza hotel in Wauwatosa. Two more full days of curling with fantastically close games lent to great excitment for all those that visited. A house party in the curling club's upper viewing area was enjoyed Friday night with great food and better conversation. Saturday allowed the ladies a night on their own to enjoy many of the fantastic restaurants in 'Tosa.
The semi-final and finals were held on Sunday. Every moment was exciting with the first event final result coming down to the last rock. The rink from Broomstones prevailed skipped by Dawn Gutro, viced by Carolyn MacLeod, second was Elaine Ritchie and lead was Sue Fink. Runner-up's in the first were from Madison, skip Lori Karst, vice Mary Ann Jerred, second Dawn Nonn and lead Judi Page.

When you "love to curl" it's easy to put your "whole heart" into the game. All the curlers certainly did that entire weekend. At the 61st Annual USWCA National Bonspiel, both the competition, and the pure enjoyment of 'spieling was "heartily" displayed by all!
2008 60th National USWCA Bonspiel -"Diamonds on Ice"
Duluth Curling Club hosted 32 teams February 13 - 17, 2008
The 60th USWCA National Bonspiel "Diamonds on Ice" began Wednesday evening, February 13 with the Kit Party at the Duluth Children's Museum. It was a wonderful and inter-active place to have the Kit Party, and a terrific way to kick-off the Bonspiel. The theme was selected because diamond is the gem for a 60th anniversary.
Thirty-two teams competed in the event from all five regions of the USWCA on the Duluth Curling Club's wonderful 8 sheets of ice. The Opening Ceremonies and first draw began Thursday morning with the first rock being thrown by Linda Draper - President of the USWCA. Many past-presidents swept her stone to the button!
The cocktail party, banquet and Annual Meeting were held Thursday evening at the Holiday Inn with the Rockers String Trio providing music during the cocktail hour and local dancers providing entertainment before the meal.
Three house parties were held Friday evening. On Saturday evening the Duluth Curling Club was open for our women to come and enjoy themselves and unwind from the days curling.
The finals of all events were held at 9:00 am on Sunday February 17, with the finalists piped on the ice by Chuck Bergquist. The awards ceremony immediately followed.
Chair Cindy Lawrence said "All-in-all the week was full of renewed and new friendships and great curling. We wish to extend a huge thank you to all the committee chairs for their dedication to this event and hard work that went into making this bonspiel a big success. And congratulations to Marcy Calaway and her team on becoming Champions of "Diamonds on Ice".
Cindy added "Thank you to all who participated in this 60th USWCA National Bonspiel. We sincerely appreciate your sportsmanship and enthusiasm."
