USWCA has acquired a Scottish pin collections and shadow box, from the estate of Beverly Sponaugle, a member of the 1976 Scots’ Tour. The tapestry and shadowbox measures 24” x 30” x 4” and would make a great wall hanging or table. This prized memento will be raffled on March 16 at the Winter Board of Director’s meeting and proceeds will benefit the USWCA.
Bev Sponaugle Story as told by Diane Firari
Bev Sponaugle and Jaci Walters, were part of the 1976 Scot Tour. They were great friends of mine. They both curled at Hershey Curling Club. The fact that a club as small as Hershey would have two members on a tour team was beyond highly unlikely. However, they had both applied and Bev was accepted. Then when Harriet Hahne (Virginia, MN), designated team captain, decided to drop out and get married instead, the uniforms had all been ordered. Jaci was tall as was Harriet and that’s how she ended up going to Scotland with Beverly. Jaci was the only applicant who fit into Harriet’s uniform.
During our 75th anniversary year Bethany Rivera emailed to members stories of USWCA’s history, and Beverly, age 95, replied regarding her 1976 tour experience.
Bev wrote: … another Hershey girl Jaci Walters I see all the time, and (I) think Leanne Peterson keeps in touch with her or did at one time. Other than that, I think all have passed.
It was, as said before, one of the best things in my lifetime … and what a pleasure to have been chosen for the team. ~ Beverly Stahl Sponaugle
