USWCA Celebrates 75 Years

(From the Winter 2022 WRep Sheet)

It's official -- USWCA is 75.  Proclamations from the State of Wisconsin (where USWCA was founded) and the State of New York (site of the National Women's Bonspiel) recognized us as the oldest national curling association in the U.S.  The honors were presented at the Kit Party held at the Utica CC on Wednesday, February 23, 2022.  Special Guest included federal, state, and local government officials and nine USWCA past presidents.

2022 Marks USWCA's Diamond Jubilee

September 30, 2021 by Lucy Harr, 75th Anniversary Committee Chair

It's our 75th Anniversary and like all milestones, it's a chance to look back, look around, and look ahead.  Looking back, we see the foresight of the women meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in January 1945 to form an organization for women curlers.  By 1947, a constitution was written and the United States Women's Curling Association was born.  Looking around, we see the roarin' game reemerge from the blank end, and looking ahead, we see more opportunities for encouraging youth and women to learn to curl.

You and your Club can recognize the occasion in a number of ways.  A commemorative pin will be available as will an Historical Review highlighting key events.  Visit the Merchandise page to order, but you can also support our mission by making a gift at the respective premium levels and receiving one or both of these items as a Thank You gift.  Check a forthcoming email for details.  A vest featuring the pin will also be on offer.

A list of ideas about how your Club can join in the celebration can be found further down on this page and if your Club installs ice decals, watch for more information on availability.

The upcoming National Bonspiel will also recognize our Diamond Jubilee.  See below for details.

USWCA 75th Anniversary Celebration

The 75th Anniversary Committee is busy planning for the USWCA Diamond Jubilee celebration in the 2021 - 2022 season.  An anniversary party is being planned to be held at the Winter Meeting and National Bonspiel at the Utica Curling Club in Whitesboro, New York in February of 2022.

Committee members have developed a pin and are in the process of developing a historical review book compiling the USWCA's activities and accomplishments since its formation in 1947.  These items will be available for purchase beginning in the summer of 2021 on the Merchandise page. Details are coming!

In commemoration of the 75th anniversary, the USWCA (through our Pins and Trophies Committee) is providing the trophy at the right which will be given to the US Curling Association.  The trophy is engraved on one side with - USA Curling Senior Women's National Championship.  The other side reads - Presented by the United States Women's Curling Association to commemorate its 75th Anniversary 1947 - 2022.

The 75th Anniversary Committee has also been working to generate ideas to help member clubs participate in this milestone event throughout 2021 and 2022.  Although many clubs are not available for curling during the pandemic, it's still possible to broomstack virtually.  Why not hold a get-together to learn more about the history of women's curling at your club?  Hold a video conference social hour and invite long-term women curlers to share their stories about how they cam to curling.  Consider recording the session.

Anyone interested in helping, reach out using the Contact tab on our website and 'Send us a message'.  Mention '75th' in the message box.  Watch the website and WRep sheet for more information on how you and your club can help wish the USWCA a Happy Anniversary!
