Mark Your Calendars for the 2014 - 2015 Season

Junior Bonspiel PinSince the 1999-2000 curling season, the USWCA has sponsored Junior Bonspiels with the goal of providing an opportunity for Junior Curlers of all experience levels to compete.

Currently, the USWCA sponsors three bonspiels per season, one  each in the East (GNCC), Central (OH,MI, IL, MN, WI) and West (NE, ND, UT, AL, CO, WA) regions.

WEST REGION:

Women's Curling Development Fund Application for female curlers.  Grants are available to reimburse some of the cost of coaching, instruction, and travel.  Offered through the Women's Curling Development Fund Committee.

East Region Junior Bonspiel Completed

(November 12, 2014)  The East Region Junior bonspiel was held November 7 - 9, 2014.  It was a wonderful event with 8 teams competing in a round robin format with 6 end games.  The semi- final and final matches were 8 ends.  The finals consisted of 4 events.  The winners of the first event were Hunter Clawson and Caleb Clawson, from the Potomac Curling Club, Ethan Kennedy, from the Rochester Curling Club, and Tyler Oliver, from the Philadelphia Curling Club.  The first event runners up were Andy Dunnam, Andrew Dudt, Allison Howell, and Kate Shickel from the Philadelphia Curling Club.         

Junior Bonspiels

The USWCA sponsors three spiels each year to promote interclub curling among juniors.  Most spiels offer competitive and developmental brackets.  The USWCA Junior Bonspiels are open to teams of juniors from the United States (under 21) and from Canada (under 19).  Teams are open format (any combination of males and females).  Bonspiel participants do not have to belong to the USWCA member clubs.  Teams can enter a USWCA spiel from any region and may play in more than one per season.

A new season of curling is upon us.  The United States Women's Curling Association is excited about the upcoming Junior Spiels.  The East Region Bonspiel will be held at the Potomac Curling Club from November 7 - 9, 2014.  The Central Region Bonspiel will be held at the Madison Curling Club on December 12 - 14, 2014.  The West Region Bonspiel will be held in Grand Rapids, MN at the Itasca Curling Club.  The date is January 9 - 10, 2015. 

Travel assistance is available for those teams that travel more the 150 miles by car or 300 miles by bus, rail, or air.  Click the link for a copy of the USWCA Junior Travel Assistance Request Form

Junior Bonspiels Underway for the 2013 - 2014 Season

The first USWCA sponsored Junior Bonspiel of this season was held at the Centerville Curling Club in Centerville, Wisconsin.  The spiel was a double round robin format and the curlers also had an opportunity for a hot shots competition.

 

Fisrt Event Winner, Carlson rink from Mankato, MN

The winner of the Event was a team from Mankato, MN, (pictured left to right above): Skip Matt Carlson, with Vice Nick Steinhaus, Second Seth Doering, and Lead Sam Huck. 

 

Event RU Deetz rink from LaCrosse

The runner-up in the spiel was a team from LaCrosse Curling Club (pictured left to right above): Skip Sam Deetz, with Vice Tommy Lenz, Lead Ian Hofland, and Second Clara Hofland. 

As the second half gets rolling, we are looking forward to Junior Bonspiels at Nutmeg Curling Club, February 21 - 23, 2014 and Evergreen Curling Club February 28 - March 2, 2014.  These events are very fun for the Junior curlers and a wonderful opportunity to practice developing skills.

Junior Bonspiel Locations for the 2013 - 2014 Season

The USWCA is happy to announce the locations of this seasons regional Junior Bonspiels. The bonspiels provide a wonderful opportunity for interclub play among competitive and developmental junior curlers. The dates and locations for this season are listed to the right in the 'Mark Your Calendars' column.

The USWCA bonspiels are open to teams of juniors from the United States and Canada. Teams are open format. Participants do not have to belong to USWCA member clubs. Teams can enter from any region and play in more than one region in a single season.

Travel assistance is available for those teams that travel more than 150 by car or more than 300 miles by bus, rail, or air. 2013 Winners of the Junior Bonspiel - Central Division

The winners of the 2013 Central Division/Competitive Division were from Portage, the host club. Congratulations to the Bear Rink - Madison Bear (skip), Leah Harvey (vice), Lani Dubberstein (second), AnnMarie Dubberstein (lead), and Keagan Garrigan (fifth). Congratulations are also extended to the winners of the 2013 Developmental Division from Stevens Point - Rachel Kawleski (skip), Suzanna Viau (vice) Sydnie Schnieder (second), Krista Domaszek (lead), and Delaney Lawlis (fifth). 2013 Winners of the Junior Bonspiel - Eastern Division

The Utica Curling Club hosted this year's Junior Bonspiel/Eastern Division. The winners of the 2013 Competitive Division were the Broomstones 1 team of Jack Kelly (skip), Chase Sinnett (vice), Justin Arndt (second), and Clayton Kincaid (lead). The winners of the 2013 Developmental Division were from Albany - Deanna Ryder (skip), Caitlyn Ball (vice), Daisy Ball (second), and Samantha Silverman (lead). There were 6 teams competing over all and everyone had a great time, curling, eating, and partying. Congratulations to the winning rinks.

2012 Winners of the Junior Bonspiel-Central Division were both from the Midland Curling Club

It was a cold day at the Exmoor Country Club but two teams from Midland Michigan were hot, taking top honors in both the Competitive and Developmental events. For the Competitive event, Wes Pederson, Aaron Carlson and Brandon Wichman won, with Logan Cook Wesley Swartz, Will Heckbarth and Marcus Minardi winning Developmental honors. Congratulations to a great event!

Three USWCA Sponsored Junior Bonspiels Set for this 2012 Season!

The USWCA is sponsoring three regional junior bonspiels this season in order to promote interclub curling among juniors. The USWCA will provide winner and runner up pins for four events as well as a traveling trophy for the first event winners.
This season's bonspiels were held at the following clubs:

  • Duluth Curling Club in Duluth MN for The Bert Payne January 20-22, 2012.
  • Exmoor Country Club, in Highland Park, IL on January 21-22, 2012.
  • Cape Cod Curling Club, in Falmouth, MA on January 27-29, 2012.

USWCA bonspiels are open to teams of juniors from the United States (under 21) and from Canada (under 19). Teams are open format (any combination of males and females). Bonspiel participants do not have to belong to USWCA member clubs. Teams can enter a USWCA junior bonspiel from any region. Teams may also play in more than one USWCA bonspiel in a single season.

The USWCA is looking for member clubs who are willing to host junior bonspiels in the coming seasons. The host club can elect to have the USWCA sponsor an existing spiel, it is not necessary to add an additional event to the calendar.
